Many people block off a specific time and day for themselves and their loved ones which is a good idea but it is often pushed aside because of work or daily personal obligations. What is the answer? I know I don’t have all the answers and since I started working from home this has been a major challenge for me. If there is an emergency my office is right upstairs. If I am downstairs relaxing after a long day, my work is still on my mind and it is almost as if my computer is calling me from upstairs! Between work and everyday life it seems to be an almost impossible challenge for any one whether working from home or in an office.
My solution is a work in progress … I have started scheduling time for different functions of my work and sticking to it without being lured into other projects that might be more appealing to me. I have learned to step away from what I am doing at the end of the day or if I have to work overtime to keep it to a minimum. Some days I am literally prying my hands from the keyboard because I think “oh it will only take a few minutes to finish this project” WRONG! One project leads into another and now you are there 2 hours longer.
There will always be exceptions but if there is a goal in mind it is easier to stick to it. I remember when I was growing up we would have dinner at the table and although my Dad travelled a lot, when he was home and it was dinner he never discussed work. It was years before I even knew what he did. I had to ask him!
I try to do the same as my Dad and shut off the work mode after the day is done and if I want to be on the computer for activities outside of work I use my laptop downstairs in the living room. I know everyone is not in the same situation but perhaps this will help to create ideas for others.
The things I have learned are that my home will never be spotless again, that sometimes dinner will be on the fly and when it is time for vacations do not put them aside for a rainy day. Do it now or you may not get the chance!
