There are some people who prefer to work on contract as they get to meet new people and see new places each time they leave one job and start another. They plan carefully to make sure that they are financially solvent in case it takes a month before another opportunity comes along. Usually they have a very special skill set that is in high demand.
To the rest of us it may sound scary … one year of employment at a company and then no guarantee? Actually it can be a very good avenue and here are two of the major reasons.
1. It gives you a chance to check out the company and if your performance is good you just may find a permanent job there. Take the time to get to know the different departments and don’t be afraid to ask if there is any chance you could be considered for a position at the end of your contract.
2. If you are out of work a contract position can help you get back on your feet. It may only last a few months or a year but you will gain good experience. Also, future employers will be impressed there are no gaps or very few in your employment. It shows that you had the initiative to keep on working even if it was not long term.
I started out on contract at a company and was pretty nervous about it as the position lasted one year with no guarantees. Eleven years later I was still there as I had been hired permanently by another company that did business with them. It was a great experience and I met a lot of people and gained invaluable knowledge. Looking back I am glad I took that chance.
