The “norm” today is business casual but let me be clear that it does not mean jeans. It means a nice pair of pants and a shirt or blouse to match. Although I have never looked at anyone’s shoes as many recruiters do they should not be sneakers. Your wardrobe does not have to be the latest and greatest in fashion but neat and clean goes a long way. It is a sign that you really want the job and that you made the effort to look your best for the interview.
Many people say you should wear dark colors such as navy but personally any color that does not blind me is fine. However, do not wear red and the best bet are solid colors as it does not distract from what you are saying to the recruiter or hiring manager.
If you decide to wear a suit or dress it will not go unnoticed as there is nothing more impressive than someone that has the “total look” when they walk through the door. Of course after that is up to you to dazzle with your answers. Dressing up only impresses until you start answering questions.
Some miscellaneous reminders…do not wear a lot of make, keep the jewelry to a minimum and forget excessive hair gel or cologne (women and men)! There have actually been times when I have had to “speed interview” because cologne has been suffocating me to the point where I cannot breath.
Is it fair to judge someone by what they wear? Probably not but someone that presents a polished presentation impresses the interviewer.
If you have any questions let me know! Have a fantastic Monday!
