My suggestion is to give the company a range of $5,000 making the lowest figure the salary you want to receive and go up $5,000 from there. For example, if you are looking for a job that will pay you $65,000 you would put in the upper right hand corner of your resume and cover letter "Salary Requirements: $65,000 - $70,000". If you want you can go for a $10,000 range but it might be too much of a gap and you don’t want to knock yourself out of the competition. The theory behind giving a range is it does not box you in at one price. You can always negotiate down but rarely can you negotiate up.
There is another option that I personally do not think is a good idea and that is to put “Negotiable”. As a former recruiter and HR Manager it gives the impression that the individual would take anything automatically putting them at the lower end of the salary scale.
As always if you have any suggestions or comments please feel free to go to www.resumerd.com “Ask Resume Road” and the subject will be posted for discussion.
Have a great day!
