It is always a good idea to call your former manager and let them know to expect a reference check in the near future. Make sure to get their current phone number as many times the manager may have moved on to another company. When you are not sure what your former supervisor will say let the recruiter know if there was some sort of personality conflict that happened. It is not unusual and better that the recruiter calling for the reference is prepared. If you have five previous jobs and only one gives you a so/so reference then the recruiter will know to take that into consideration.
If you are just graduating from college personal references are great but a recruiter knows that your family or close friend will not say anything to jeopardize your chances for getting the job. Usually a professor or teacher is a reference you would want to put down. Also, if you did an internship even if it was just for the summer it is a great reference.
There are a lot of avenues you can take when putting down your references but be prepared because a prospective employer will usually ask for at least three.
Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!
