If you are looking to make a move into a career totally different than what you are doing now make sure you have the qualifications before you leap. With that being said some qualifications can be what we call “transferable.” If you are in purchasing for one company basically you can move to a whole different venue but will just have to learn that product because you have the purchasing skills. Or if you have worked as a manager in a bank you can probably be a manager in an insurance company. Managing people for the most part is a transferable skill.
When changing careers you need to change your resume to reflect what qualifications you have for the new career you are going in to. If you are working as an engineer now and have decided to go into criminal justice you need to take a good look at the job description and match up you current qualifications to what they have in the job description. Transferable skills play a big part in this unless you have taken an additional course which leads me to….
Before making that jump either get the degree you need or take evening courses that pertain to the career you want to go into. Some of the careers may not require a degree so some background courses would help on your resume.
Make sure that you absolutely and positively want to change careers or else you will not be happy. The upside to having another career is your first career can always be your fallback position should a layoff or downsizings occur.
There is nothing wrong with changing your career mid-stream. Many people have done this and have been very successful. Just get all your “ducks in a row” and go for it!!!
