A lot of times you do not because it is work that needs to get done. However, you do not want to end up in a cycle of working overtime all the time because if you do something is going to suffer. Maybe you will get home too late to spend time with your children. Maybe your friends will start thinking you don’t want to be with them anymore. Or your significant other suddenly finds themselves sitting alone at the dinner table night after night. It is not healthy mentally or physically.
There was a time in my life were I worked overtime on a regular basis. I got so use to it that when I tried to break the cycle I would go home and not know what to do with myself. In fact I would come in about an hour early and then go home late. One morning I actually came in at the time I was supposed to start work and my boss was waiting at my door and wanted to know why I was late. That was a reality check! I had become a workaholic.
In business there are peaks and valleys and there will be times when you need to stay late but you should always stay connected to your friends and family. When you come home leave the office at the office and spend time with your significant other and children. Say “no” once and while to late office nights if you can so that it is not always “expected” of you. If they see you there every night then the belief will be that you don’t mind being there every night. Also, that down side of that is they may start thinking you can’t get you work done on time.
So work late when needed as it will be appreciated and noted. But go home on time whenever you can and enjoy the evening. Life is short.
